ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The University of Richmond women's golf team left no doubt that it is back and as good, if not better than ever this weekend; dismantling the field at the Navy Fall Invitational and winning going away, bolstered by individual champion Sophie DiPetrillo.
The junior set the 54-hole course record by firing a +1, 217 and shattering her previous low-tournament score by 11 strokes. Her 54-hole score is the fourth lowest in program history. She began Sunday's round tied for second after putting together rounds of +5, 77 and -3, 69, respectively on Saturday. The latter of which matched the lowest score in program history. Sophie then notched her second-straight round under par in the form of a -1, 71 to clinch victory on Sunday. As a sophomore, DiPetrillo went all of a 2016-17 without going under par; in fact, these two rounds were her first south of par in her career. She is also just the sixth individual medalist in program history.
As a team, the Spiders also set course and program records with a second-round score of 289 as well as a course record, 54-hole score of +22, 886. The Spiders won the event by 29 strokes, besting second-place team and Patriot League foe Navy (+51). Lehigh (+61) and Boston (+72), also Patriot League teams, finished third and fourth, respectively. The team title is the seventh in program history and the first outside of the Patriot League Championship since the team won the Whistling Straits Intercollegiate during the 2015-16 season. The Spiders will return to the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Club in the spring looking to three-peat the Patriot League title.
Individuals from Navy and Monmouth took the second and third spots overall but the Spiders occupied the next four with Isabella Rusher (76-73-75-224, +8), Annie Collom (78-73-73-224, +8) and Elsa Diaz (73-76-75-224, +8) all tying for fourth with freshman Lizzie Reedy (77-74-75-226, +10) finishing seventh. Collom's 224, +8 effort is the best scoring performance of her career.
"This was a tremendous all-around effort from everyone involved," head coach Ali Wright said. "I proud of how hard this group worked over the summer, it proved that they're never satisfied and that they're willing to do what it takes to reach that next level. It's great to see Sophie take home an individual trophy and to see Annie set her personal best tournament. This is a great way to get the season started and hopefully we can keep it going."
The team will be back in action next Sunday and Monday, September 24-25 when it travels to the Boston College Intercollegiate where it will compete at Blue Hill Country Club. The event will be competed over 36 holes on Sunday and 18 on Saturday with teams from Ball State, Boston College, Brown, Elon, Fairleigh Dickinson, FIU, Georgetown, Illinois State, Lipscomb, North Dakota State, St. John's, USC-Upstate, South Dakota, Wagner and Wofford joining the fray.
