CANTON, Mass. – The 2017-18 edition of Richmond women's golf appears to be setting a standard for future teams to follow as more history was made at the Boston College Intercollegiate on Monday. The Spiders not only won the event, hosted at Blue Hill Country Club, but senior Elsa Diaz (+1, 217) took home the individual medal as well.
By firing a +23, 887 the Spiders bested second-place Boston College by 11 strokes to take the crown. This marks the first time in program history that the Spiders have won back-to-back team events and just the third time that a team has won multiple events in the same season. The team score of 291 in the second round is the second-best single round in program history, topped only by a 289 this team fired just last week, and the final round 295 matches the seventh-best performance. Â
Diaz becomes just the seventh Spider in program history to win an event outright and the third on the current roster to do so (Isabella Rusher, Sophie DiPetrillo). The San Antonio, Texas native posted the best, single round in program history with a second-round 68, matched the eighth-best 36 hole score (+1, 145) and equaled the fourth-best 54 hole score (+1, 217).
This is also the first time in program history that Spider individuals have won back-to-back events and the first time since the 2012-13 campaign that the team has picked up two individual medals in the same year.
"We've been so consistent and steady these last two weeks," head coach Ali Wright said. "We talk a lot about what it's going to take to reach that next level of success and we are absolutely taking steps towards achieving those goals. I'm so proud of Elsa for putting it all together this week and breaking the single round scoring record. She's always had it in her. She led us to a great team win and success like this is only going to breed more."
Not to be lost in all of this is the fact that freshman Lizzie Reedy posted rounds of 74, 75 and 73 to cruise to a +6, 222 and a fourth-place finish. That number bests her debut performance at the Navy Invite by four strokes and gives Lizzie her second top 10 finish in as many outings.
Annie Collom finished in a tie for sixth with a +8, 224 effort, matching the best tournament of her career, and Sophie DiPetrillo made it a quartet of Spiders in the top 10 with a +9, 225 to finish in a tie for 10th. Isabella Rusher closed in a tie for 34th with a 233 and Ally Steffen saw her first collegiate action as an individual (+34, 250).
The Spiders now turn their attention to the Bill Berg Invitational, hosted by Western Carolina at The Ridges Golf Club in Hayesville, N.C. That event will take place over two days Oct. 16-17.
