BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Every fall, thousands of cross country runners descend upon Bethlehem, Pennsylvania for the prestigious Paul Short Invitational.
Among the talented field was the University of Richmond cross country teams, who led by junior Colleen Carney and sophomore Miles Clikeman, had a strong showing along side some of the best runners in the country.
The women's team finished 15th in a field of 42 teams and over 400 runners.
Carney led the way with a career-best time of 20:55 for a six-kilometer course. She bested her previous time by over a minute (21:57.8 at NCAA Southeast Regional meet last fall).
Senior Kylie Regan clocked in close behind Carney at a career-best 21:00. Both Carney and Regan finished in the top-75 of the race.
Six of the seven Spiders finished with career best times for the six-kilometer course, including Claire Brown (21:13), Ave Grosenheider (21:17), Shelby Cain (21:29) and Eryn Mills (21:42).
"Although the team fell shy of our Top-10 goal, we had several great individual performances. Although a 27 second spread is good for most teams, this team is at its best and taking advantage of its depth when we have a 5-10 sec spread for our top 5," Head Coach Lori Taylor said. "When we can keep that spread and position ourselves to compete against the top teams in our region and other regions the team will be utilizing all the tools they hold. This team is learning and correcting each week. I have confidence they will continue to make the adjustments, grow in their confidence, and execute their best team races when it matters most."
Clikeman continued his outstanding Spider career with a top-two showing in the College Brown 8k race. His time of 24:42 was his career-best for an eight-kilometer course.
Senior Johnny Hogue also had a great showing, finishing in the top-10 of the race, which featured 153 runners. Hogue also clocked in with a career-best 24:59, 40 seconds faster than his previous eight-kilometer best.
Sophomores Will Alpaugh (26:31) and Seamus Otto (28:14) rounded out the Spider finishers on the men's side.
Richmond returns to action on Saturday, October 14 when it travels to Louisville, Ky for the Pre-National Meet.
