Spiders Drop 5-1 Decision To #17 JMU
09/29/2017 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – One thing is quite certain about the University of Richmond field hockey program: They aren't afraid to challenge themselves.
That was on display yet again on Friday afternoon at Crenshaw Field when the Spiders faced a ranked opponent for the sixth time this fall with #17 James Madison coming to campus.
Richmond battled the Dukes, but JMU used a second-half rally to pull away for the 5-1 win over the Spiders.
The two teams battled back and forth early on with neither team finding the back of the cage through the first 10 minutes of the game.
Senior Kasey Gilbride changed that when she blasted one home in the 15th minute for her second goal of the season and gave the Spiders a 1-0 advantage.
Five minutes later, the Dukes got a penalty stroke and were able to convert to tie the game up at 1-1.
Junior Felicitas Heinzel turned away JMU five times in the first half, but the Dukes were able to grab a 2-1 lead just before halftime.
The potent JMU offense continued to be aggressive and found the back of the cage three times in the second half, but not before Heinzel turned away seven more shots.
Heinzel's 12 saves marked the seventh time this fall that the junior had registered double-digit saves.
The Spiders continue their challenging schedule when they welcome #21 Saint Joseph's to Crenshaw Field on Sunday. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
