Spiders Split Dual Meet with Queens and Davidson

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Challenges always bring out the best in competitors.
That's exactly what the University of Richmond swimming team saw on Saturday in a dual meet against Queens University, the reigning Division II National Champions, and Atlantic 10 contender Davidson.
The Spiders grabbed 18 top-three finishes on the day, highlighted by five victories from freshman Jordan Kohut (50-yard back), sophomore Hannah Gouger (100-yard back), freshman Mallory Shake (50-yard butterfly), junior Morgan Soulia (200-yard IM) and the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Kohut had quite a showing in her first collegiate meet with three top-three finishes. Along with her win in the 50-yard back (25.90), she was a part of the 400-yd medley team that finished second with a time of 3:54.25. She wrapped up her weekend with a third-place showing in the 50-yd butterfly (27.21).
Soulia grabbed two top-two finishes at the meet, including her win in the 200 IM, clocking in at 2:07.69. She also touched the wall second in the 50yd breast (30.17). In addition, she added a top-five finish in the 1000yd free (10:46.86).
Senior Annie Lane continued her steady Spider career with a second-place finish in the 1000yd free (10:21.50), a third-place showing in the 500-yd free (5:07.01) and a fourth-place finish in the 50-yd breast (30.35). Lane also saw the first leg of the victorious 200yd freestyle relay, along with Gouger, Shake and sophomore Virginia Marsh (1:37.60).
Shake and fellow classmate Ellie Ronan had strong starts to their Spider careers. Along with Shake's wins in the 50yd butterfly and the 200yd freestyle relay, she also swam the second leg of the 400-yd medley, which finished second.
Ronan had three top-three finishes, highlighted by a second-place finish in the 200yd IM (2:10.69). She also finished third in the 50yd backstroke (27.30) and 100yd backstroke (59.07).
The Spiders return to the pool on Friday, October 20th in the Richmond Duals, with the divers getting into action on Friday, October 6th at UNC Wilmington.
