Spiders Fall Just Short at #3 Virginia, 1-0
09/03/2017 | Women's Soccer
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team continues to dominate on the defensive end of the field, and Sunday afternoon was no different.
Â
Freshman goalkeeper Olivia Sjodin led a solid defensive unit that allowed No. 3 Virginia to score just once in 90 minutes, as the Cavaliers went on to take a 1-0 win at Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville.
Â
"This was another strong performance by the Spiders," head coach Peter Albright said. "The team stayed organized and kept its composure against one of college soccer's most storied programs."
Â
The Spiders and Cavaliers were scoreless through the opening 24 minutes of play, despite two one-on-one chances for senior Lexi Prillaman. Her first shot was saved and second hit the post.
Â
Virginia struck in the 25th minute of play, when Brianna Westrup headed the ball into the net off of a corner kick service from Taylor Ziemer. It would be the only goal of the game for either team.
Â
"We had three great chances to score and could have easily been up 2-1 at half," Albright added. "The maturity and grit we showed in the second half was remarkable."
Â
The Spiders took four shots on the day, while the Cavalier's rattled off 30 attempts. Virginia also finished with an 18-2 corner kick advantage.
Â
Sjodin finished the day with 12 saves, just four shy of the single-game program record. She has now logged 19 saves in her two starts for the Spiders this season.
Â
"The process of getting stronger, deeper and smarter is continuing," Albright said. "We are excited to play Elon at home on Thursday night."
Â
The Spiders will return home to face the Phoenix on Thursday night at 7:30pm. The match will be video streamed live on the A10 Digital Network by SpiderTV.
