UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team suffered another one-goal setback, falling 2-1 to Elon on Thursday night at Robins Stadium.
Carson Jones got the Phoenix on the board early with a goal in the 16th minute on a pass from Reena Wichmann. Jones sent the ball high over Spider goalkeeper Olivia Sjodin to make the score 1-0.
The Spiders would respond in the first half, as sophomore Alyssa Walker received a long pass from senior Lexi Prillaman in the 34th minute and capitalized on a 1-on-1 opportunity, burying the ball past the Elon goalkeeper to tie the game heading into the break. It was Walker's team-leading second goal of the season.
The deciding goal came from Elon just over two minutes into the second half, as Hannah Doherty stole the ball in the Spiders' defensive end and sent the game-winning shot past goalie Katie Brennan.
The Phoenix finished with a 13-9 shot advantage and a 7-1 edge in corner kick opportunities. Sjodin and Brennan split time in goal, combining for five saves on the night.
The Spiders return to action on Sunday, September 10, when they travel to face No. 3 West Virginia. Kickoff in Morgantown is set for 1 p.m.
