Sherod Scores Career-High 28 As Coach Mooney Collects His 250th Career Win
01/24/2018 | Men's Basketball
Of Coach Chris Mooney's first 249 career wins, it's safe to say that few required the type of effort the Spiders expended Wednesday night as they upended Duquesne in overtime to stretch their win streak to four and secure a milestone victory for their coach.Â
The Spiders started quickly, hitting their first seven shots from the field and building a 20-8 lead early. But Duquesne, who had won 10 straight at home, fought back to close the gap to just six at intermission.
Â
Again, Richmond stormed out of the break, opening the second half on a 10-0 run capped by consecutive three-pointers from Nick Sherod. When Grant Golden slammed home a missed layup to give the Spiders a 50-34 lead with 13:41 remaining, Richmond seemed well on its way to a seventh straight win over the Dukes.
Â
But Duquense scored 18 of the game's next 20 points to tie the score at 52 with just under eight minutes remaining.
Â
Following a Grant Golden free throw that put the Spiders ahead by one, Nick Sherod scored Richmond's next 10 points and his layup with 1:31 to go put the lead at four.
Â
But a dunk and wild three-pointer from Duquesne gave the Dukes the lead before Grant Golden's old-fashioned three-point play put the Spiders up two with 13 seconds left.
Â
Duquesne scored to tie the game with six seconds left and send the Spiders to overtime for the third time this season following earlier OT losses at Boston College and Fordham.
Â
The teams exchanged leads early in the extra period. With the score tied at 73, De'Monte Buckingham drew a charge on Dukes freshman Eric Williams Jr. On the ensuing possession, Nick Sherod's jumper gave Richmond a two-point lead. With the Dukes trying to tie or go ahead, Buckingham tied up Mike Lewis II, giving possession back to the Spiders. Buckingham got the ball on the inbounds pass and was quickly fouled. His two foul shots with seven seconds remaining iced the game for the Spiders, securing a fourth straight win for Richmond.
Â
Sherod finished with a game and career-high 28 points, tied for the most by any Spiders in a game this season. 15 of his 28 came in the game's final 12 minutes.
Â
Grant Golden finished one rebound shy of a double-double, totaling 21 points and nine rebounds. It was Golden's sixth 20-point effort of the season, tied with Charles Stephens in 1998-99 for the most by a Spiders freshman in the last 20 years.
Â
Second place in the Atlantic 10 will be on the line Sunday when Richmond (5-3) visits Davidson (5-2). The game will be broadcast nationally on the NBC Sports Network. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 PM ET.
