SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference announced on Thursday afternoon its 2018 preseason All-SoCon team as well the coaches poll as voted on by the league's eight head coaches. Teddy Hatfield and Austin Cates earned All-Conference recognition for the Spiders who were picked second, behind defending champion Air Force, with two first-place votes.
Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own teams or student-athletes.
Richmond, which ranks No. 20 in the preseason Inside Lacrosse poll, received 43 points in the voting after finishing the 2017 season with a record of 12-4 overall and a 6-1 mark in the SoCon. Air Force received just four more points than the Spiders and the remaining six first-place votes. Furman (37) was picked third with Jacksonville (28), High Point (25), Bellarmine (21), Mercer (16) and VMI (7) rounding out the poll.
Hatfield is one of three attackers chosen to the All-Conference team. The junior was lights out during his sophomore campaign in 2017. He scored team-high 33 goals to go with 26 assists for a program-record 59 points. His per game averages of 2.06 goals, 1.62 assists, and 3.69 points all led the SoCon en route to being named to the SoCon First Team. His five hat tricks in 2017 are also a program record and on three occasions set a program record with eight points in a single game.
Cates is a back-to-back All-SoCon choice, earning First Team recognition a season ago. He joins the preseason team as the choice at LSM after playing a heavy roll on a Spider defense that led the country allowing just 6.25 goals per game. His 29 ground balls were good for fourth on the team and his 14 caused turnovers were third.
Richmond will open its season officially on Saturday, Feb. 10 at UMBC. That game is set to face off at Noon. From there the Spiders will get the home slate started with a visit from Bucknell on Saturday, Feb. 17 at Noon.
