Golden Goes For 24 But Spiders Lose At Saint Louis
01/06/2018 | Men's Basketball
Grant Golden led all scorers with 24 points and Jacob Gilyard chipped in 13 points in his return to Missouri but the freshmen weren't able to lead the Spiders to a road win at Saint Louis Saturday night.
The Billikens size advantage was apparent from the opening tip and they controlled the glass and the paint for much of the game, finishing with a 38-29 rebounding edge and outscoring the Spiders 36-22 in the paint.
Despite the Billikens production on the inside, the Spiders built a 10-point lead early in the second half as Golden and Gilyard combined for 12 of Richmond's first 17 points after halftime. But the Spiders managed just one field goal over a nine-minute stretch in the middle of the final period, allowing Saint Louis to come all the way back and pull away for a seven-point win as the Billikens improved to 7-3 at Chaifetz Arena this year.
Golden registered his fourth 20-point effort of the season and his eight rebounds were tied with De'Monte Buckingham for the most of any Spider. Buckingham added nine points, all coming on a trio of three-pointers, and a team-high six assists.
Gilyard, a Kansas City-native who is the the reigning Class 3 Player of the Year in Missouri, added five assists to go along with his 13 points. He played before more than 40 family members and friends who made the trek across Missouri to see his first collegiate game in the Show-Me State. Khwan Fore was the third Spider in double figures, finishing with 11 points and making five of his 10 field-goal attempts. One game after scoring a season-high 27 points, Joe Kirby's reverse layup was the only scoring from the Richmond bench Saturday.
The Spiders return to action Tuesday at the Robins Center where they will take on Dayton. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM ET. The game is the first of four straight the Spiders will play in Richmond - a stretch that includes three home games and a road game at VCU on January 17.
