RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football team hits the road for the first of two-straight contests away from home, beginning Saturday evening when the Spiders take on the Albany Great Danes in Colonial Athletic Association action. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.
The game will be streamed online for free via Albany athletics, with links available at www.richmondspiders.com and Spider social media. Additionally, the game will be audio broadcasted on ESPN Richmond and online via TuneIn with Bob Black, Chris Anderson and Matt Smith on the call. Full game notes are available in the links to the right and are brought to you by Owen & Owens.
Saturday's game marks the sixth meeting all-time between Richmond and Albany, including the fifth meeting as Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) members as the Great Danes joined league in 2013. The Spiders are 5-0 all-time against Albany but the last three meetings have been decided by only 16 points, with the last two seasons seeing the teams play multiple overtime games.
Last season, the Spiders and Great Danes played a double overtime contest at Robins Stadium with Richmond posting a 41-38 victory. Kicker Griffin Trau (Hanover, N.H.) hit the game-winning field goal in the second overtime from 34-yards out for the victory. The Spiders' victory was set up by the special teams as Daniel Jones (Williamsburg, Va.) blocked a 40-yard field goal attempt on Albany's possession of the second overtime.
Linebacker Justin Rubin (Southampton, Pa.) led the defense with 12 tackles while defensive lineman Colby Ritten (Orlando, Fla.) had nine tackles, including two sacks. Defensive lineman Andrew Clyde (Dallas, Texas) also added a pair of sacks as the Spiders recorded seven total sacks in the victory. Former Spider quarterback Kyle Lauletta threw for 353 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receivers Tyler Wilkins (Richmond, Va.) and Cortrelle Simpson (Indian Head, Md.) each added 97 yards and 78 yards, respectively, in the win.
Two years ago, Richmond traveled to Albany and came away with a 36-30 victory in triple overtime when the Great Danes were ranked No. 16 in the country. The Spiders' defense came up with a stop on downs in the third overtime to give Richmond the win. Running back Deontez Thompson (Indian Head, Md.) ran for 112 yards on 20 carries, while scoring a career-high three touchdowns in the win.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Joe Mancuso (Blairsville, Ga.) made his first career start last weekend when starting quarterback Kevin Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.) was ruled out due to a concussion. Mancuso made the most of his first career collegiate start, setting a Richmond record for total offense with 560 yards.
Mancuso threw for 489 yards passing on 27-for-37 with three touchdowns and five interceptions. He also ran for 71 yards on 15 carries with a touchdown. His 560 yards of total offense broke the school record set by Michael Strauss on Nov. 16, 2013 against Delaware.
Mancuso's 489 yards passing are the third most in the FCS this season, trailing only Devlin Hodges of Samford (562) and Reece Udinski of VMI (491). His game ranks fourth all-time in Richmond passing history in a single game and is the most since former Spider Kyle Lauletta passed for 546 yards last year against Sam Houston State. He also becomes just the third quarterback in all of FCS or FBS in the last five seasons to have at least 489 passing and 71 yards rushing in a season, matching Patrick Mahomes of Texas Tech (2016) and Quinton Flowers of UCF (2017).
Simpson recorded a career-high 220 receiving yards, including two touchdowns in the loss to Delaware Saturday. His 220 yards is third-most all-time for a single game behind former Spider Walker Gillette's 242 and 264 receiving yards. Wilkins added eight catches for 175 yards and a touchdown in the passing attack. It marked the first time the Spiders have had two receivers grab over 100-yards receiving since September 23, 2017 against Elon (Dejon Brissett & Simpson).
Albany enters Saturday's game with a 2-3 overall record and an 0-2 mark in CAA play. The Great Danes have picked up wins this season at home against Morgan State and Saint Francis, while falling to Pittsburgh, Rhode Island and most recently William & Mary.
Vincent Testaverde has started all five games and has thrown for 1,263 yards this season on 84-of-156 passing. Testaverde has eight touchdown passes and 10 interceptions. Dev Holmes leads the team with 587 yards receiving on 28 catches, averaging 117.4 yards per game. Running back Elijah Ibitokun-Hanks has rushed for 501 yards on 82 carries, including a career-high 221 yards last time out against William & Mary.
