Collom Shoots School-Record 67, Spiders Register Lowest Round Ever In Win vs Columbia

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. -- Of the hundreds of rounds played by Spiders since the creation of the University of Richmond women's golf program 16 years ago, none have been better than the one played by Annie Collom at Independence Golf Club Sunday. Collom, a senior, shot a five-under 67 to break the program record for lowest 18-hole score by one stroke, beating the rounds of 68 (-4) shot by Isabella Rusher and Elsa Diaz last season.
Â
A mid-range birdie putt on 18 secured Collom's spot in Spiders history and her first medalist finish at Richmond, a three-under 141 that matched the program mark for lowest 36-hole score (Tracy Martin, 2011 Spider Invitational). After the round, Collom admitted she knew what was at stake when she lined up over the ball. "Standing over the putt I was a little shaky, for sure," said Collom. "I've wanted this record since I was a freshman here. It's good to have my name tied to it until it's broken – which it hopefully will be soon by one of my teammates."
Â
Several other Spiders turned in career performances Sunday as Richmond totaled a team score of 287 (-1), the lowest 18-hole score in the history of the program. Sophomore Lizzie Reedy matched the low round of her career with a one-under 71 to finish tied for fourth on the individual leaderboard. Freshman Naomi Mitchell carded a 73 (+1) on Sunday to finish tied for second at 145, seven shots better than her previous best 36-hole score. The Spiders fourth and final team score on Sunday came from senior Sophie DiPetrillo, who recorded a 76 (+4). Richmond's 287 on Sunday was two shots better than the previous record for lowest 18-hole team score, a 289 (+1) in the second round of last year's Navy Fall Invitational.
Â
As a team, the Spiders finished the 36-hole stroke-play event at 582 (+6), 21 shots clear of Columbia. Richmond will conclude its fall season next weekend at the Cardinal Cup in Simpsonville, Kentucky.
