10/12/2018 | Football
RICHMOND, Va. – The 2018 season for Richmond football marks the 50th anniversary of the 1968 Tangerine Bowl Championship. Spider athletics will be taking a walk down memory lane throughout the fall, reliving moments in the season heading to the Tangerine Bowl. This week, we look back at the Spiders' 21-16 victory over The Citadel for their second-straight win. Richmond was in the midst of a five-game winning streak as the Spiders closed out the season winning eight of their last nine games.
Richmond came out of the gate and scored the first 21-points of the game in the opening 19 minutes before holding on late in the fourth quarter, including a pivotal four-down stop with less than three minutes remaining. Senior quarterback Buster O'Brien led the Spiders with two touchdown passes in the opening 19 minutes and orchestrated a long drive that was capped by a Charlie Richards three-yard run for the 21-0 lead.
The Citadel came back and scored the next 14 points of the game to make it a 21-14 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Spiders turned to their defense and it came thru with three minutes remaining. The Citadel had a fourth-and-two on the Richmond 12-yard line but Bulldog quarterback Tony Passander was stopped short on a tackle by Pat Turchetta inches short turning the ball over.
The Spiders needed to run out the clock but were forced to a three and out. Instead of punting from its own end zone, Richmond decided to take a safety and get better field position on the free kick. The Spiders were able to get a 63-yard kick from Jim Livesay on the free kick, pinning the Bulldogs inside their own 20. Richmond was able to hold off The Citadel in the closing seconds to secure the victory.
