Benny Pugh Named Men’s Lacrosse Assistant Coach

RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond men's lacrosse head coach Dan Chemotti has announced the addition of former Spider Benny Pugh to the staff as an assistant coach. Pugh joins the Spider coaching staff that also includes Associate Head Coach Paul Richards and Volunteer Assistant Coach Mitch Goldberg.
"I am thrilled for the opportunity to work alongside such a committed staff" Pugh said. "Richmond Lacrosse has given me unforgettable memories on the field, and unbreakable relationships off of the field. Again, I am excited to help this team grow, and help these guys achieve their goals."
Pugh served as the volunteer assistant coach last season with the Spiders, helping Richmond to the NCAA Tournament. He was a four-year standout for the Spiders from 2014-17 and holds most of the Spiders' goalkeeping records. He holds the program's records for wins (35), goals against average (7.77), saves (554) and save percentage (.579).
Pugh was named the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a senior in 2017 when he set single-season league records for saves (184) and save percentage (.662). The team captain, Pugh was name First Team All-America after leading the NCAA in goals against average (6.10) and save percentage. He was a five-time SoCon Defensive Player of the Week as a senior and a two-time SoCon Defensive Player of the month that year.
Pugh was named the Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Award for NCAA Goalie of the Year in 2017 and was a Tewaaraton Award Nominee. Pugh was drafted by the Florida Launch in the Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Draft. He was the first overall selection in the 2018 MLL Supplemental Draft by the Boston Cannons.
Pugh earned First Team All-SoCon honors twice in his career, in 2017 and 2015. He played three years in the SoCon and still holds the leagues career records for wins (28), goals against average (7.07) and save percentage (.604). He also holds the league record for defensive player of the week awards in a career with eight total.
Pugh played his freshman season in the Atlantic Sun Conference, helping the Spiders win the A-Sun Tournament title and advancing to their first-ever NCAA Tournament in the first year of the program. He was named to the A-Sun All-Tournament Team after recording a .629 save percentage in the two wins, including seven saves in the championship game.
Pugh earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Richmond in 2017.
