50-Year Anniversary Look Back – 1968 Team Wins Third-Straight, First By Shutout

RICHMOND, Va. – The 2018 season for Richmond football marks the 50th anniversary of the 1968 Tangerine Bowl Championship. Spider athletics will be taking a walk down memory lane throughout the fall, reliving moments in the season heading to the Tangerine Bowl. This week, we look back at the Spiders' dominating 34-0 victory over Furman for their third-straight win. Richmond was in the midst of a five-game winning streak as the Spiders closed out the season winning eight of their last nine games.
Quarterback Buster O'Brien and split end Walker Gillette broke a fistful of records lead the Spiders to their conference-leading 3-0 mark while the defense posted its first shutout in 12 games. O'Brien and Gillette connected on touchdown passes of 69, 58 and 48 yards in the victory as O'Brien finished with a career-high four touchdown passes.
He finished the game just 8-of-13 from the air but through for 242 yards, an average of 30.3 yards per pass. His four touchdown passes upped his career total to 21, one of the three school records he erased during the game.
Gillette caught five O'Brien passes before both came out of the game late in the third quarter. His five receptions totaled 198 yards, a new conference record for single-game receiving yards while averaging 39.6 yards per catch. Backup quarterback Charlie Richards through a fourth quarter pass as the Spiders finishes with a single-game record 298 yards passes and 443 yards of total offense.
The game started slowly with neither team scoring in the first quarter before Richmond tallied 14 second quarter points. Gillette pulled in a 68-yard pass for the first score before Tommy England added a four-yard touchdown receptions. The Spiders broke the game open in the third quarter with two long passes to Gillette of 58-yards and 48-yards, respectively.
The victory moved the Spiders over .500 for the first time during the season at 3-2 overall, marking their third-straight win while improving to 2-0 at home.
