The Richmond women are coming off of improved performances at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Madison, Wisc. Coach Lori Taylor was optimistic, saying that while there were aspects of the race she was looking for the women to clean up, there was a lot of promise in their performance heading into the championships.
"We are looking forward to the championships this week," Taylor said. "The girls have made good progress leading into the championships segment of our season. We have experienced upperclassmen who have competed in the championships all four years and a couple 5thyear athletes who are focused on our goals."
Keep an eye out for senior Colleen Carney who has been historically strong this season, winning the Spider Alumni Open and being awarded A-10 Performer of the Week.
The Spider men are also looking for strong performances at this championship meet.
"I'm excited about where we are as a team," men's coach Steve Taylor said. "The upperclassmen have done a great job of leading throughout the season. Having Johnny Hogue and Alex Lucking back this fall following their graduation in the spring has made a huge impact. Along with Miles Clikeman, they have been through the build-up to the championships several times and that helps a lot since our men's team nearly doubled in size this fall with six of our top 10 working with freshman eligibility. The Atlantic 10 Championships are always competitive and teams always bring their best on race day. We are healthy overall and the men are looking forward to competing."
This year, the Spiders not only race in the A-10 Championships, but they also host them.
"This will be the fourth time since 2013 that we've hosted the Atlantic 10 Championships at Pole Green Park," Steve said. "The facility is truly one of the best in the state. The Hanover County Parks & Recreation staff do amazing work keeping the facility in top condition. Even with one of the wettest fall's on record and two hurricanes passing through the area combined with two of the largest high school meets in Virginia held on the facility it is in remarkable shape. From a spectator standpoint you will not find a better course. With little movement you can watch the races in their entirety, very rare for a cross country course. Adding to the event will be the live stream by SpiderTV and the ESPN Network during the races. It will be the third time we've streamed the Atlantic 10 Championship races live. It's a free event open to the public so come out and watch some great racing."
