Balanced Spiders Overwhelm Hampden-Sydney

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Sophomore Grant Golden scored a team-high 14 points to lead four Spiders in double figures as Richmond rolled to an 83-37 exhibition win over Division III Hampden-Sydney at the Robins Center Saturday night.
"I was pleased with the way we played," said head coach Chris Mooney. "The ball movement was good. The defense was good. And it was good for all the young guys to play."
In addition to Golden, Richmond started junior Nick Sherod, sophomores Jacob Gilyard and Nate Cayo, and freshman Jake Wojcik.
"Jake is a great shooter and a tough kid," said Mooney. "He's been around college basketball his whole life so that probably helps and I think he has a chance to really help us."
Wojcik played a team-high 26 minutes, one of 11 Spiders to play at least nine minutes in the game. He finished with 11 points, joining Golden (14), Gilyard (12), and Sherod (12) in double figures.
"I hope our depth can continue to come along," said Mooney. "A lot of our depth is made up of young guys who are good and we just need to get them to be as consistent as possible. Hopefully they're pushing the older guys for minutes, but they need to get as consistent as possible so they can really help us during the course of the season."
The Spiders outrebounded Hampden-Sydney by a 46-28 margin and held the Tigers to 21.4 percent shooting from the field (12-56). Golden recorded eight rebounds, tying teammate Bryce Schneider for the most in the game.
Gilyard registered a game-high seven assists, six in the first half. "I feel like we have a chance to be a very good passing team," said Mooney. "If you can pass well, that really is something that helps you in every single game. Your shooting might go up or down, the team you play might be longer or faster, but if your passing is good that can really help you in every game."
The Spiders will open the regular season November 9th at 7 PM against Longwood at the Robins Center.
