Spiders Lose Season Opener To Longwood
11/09/2018 | Men's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – A 12-2 Longwood run over the final five minutes of regulation turned a five-point Richmond lead into a season-opening 63-58 loss for the Spiders at the Robins Center Friday night. Jacob Gilyard scored a team-high 15 for Richmond. He was joined in double figures by Grant Golden (14) and Nick Sherod (11).
The Spiders built an early 13-9 lead but Longwood responded and led by as many as 10 in the first half before Richmond scored the final seven points entering halftime to cut the Lancers lead to 34-33 at intermission.
Richmond raced out of the break with an 8-0 run and built a 41-34 lead just 90 seconds into the second half. But Longwood's Isaiah Walton, who finished with a game-high 23 points, kept the Lancers in the game with a series of driving layups.
Grant Golden's layup and free throw with 5:30 remaining gave Richmond a 56-51 advantage, but Longwood scored the next eight points to regain the lead. The Spiders had a chance to tie in the final minute when Gilyard collected his game-high sixth steal in the Lancers backcourt. But he was ruled to have stepped out of bounds on the ensuing possession, turning the ball back over to Longwood and giving the Lancers a chance to cement the win at the free-throw line.
Richmond finished 6-16 from the foul line and 6-26 from three-point range. Gilyard (3-10) provided half of the Spiders makes from deep en route to his third straight game with 15 or more points dating back to last season. He also led Richmond with five assists and six steals, matching his career high. Golden registered all three of Richmond's blocks, matching his career best.
The Spiders return to action on Wednesday, November 14, when they host St. Francis Brooklyn at the Robins Center. Tip-off for Richmond's annual "Education Day" is set for 11 a.m.
