Football Hosts CAA Rival Delaware Saturday Afternoon

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football team looks to bounce back in Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend when the Spiders welcome in rival Delaware. Game time is set for 3 p.m. at Robins Stadium and is the second-straight home game for the Spiders. Richmond will honor the 50th anniversary of the 1968 Tangerine Bowl victory at halftime of the game Saturday.
Saturday's game will be broadcast on NBC Sports Washington+ and online via SpiderTV will Bob Black and Chris Anderson on the call. The game has also been picked up by NBC Sports Philadelphia+, NBC Sports Bay Area and SNY (tape delay). The game will be audio broadcast on ESPN Richmond and TuneIn with Robert Fish and Matt Smith on the call. The Spiders enter Saturday's game with a 2-3 overall record and an 0-2 mark in CAA play after opening with losses to nationally ranked Stony Brook and second-ranked James Madison. Junior quarterback Kevin Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.) leads the attack offensively, ranking 12th in the nation with 1,269 yards passing in the first five games. Johnson has connected on 87-of-153 on the year with five touchdowns passing.
Senior wide receiver Tyler Wilkins (Richmond, Va.) and junior Cortrelle Simpson (Indian Head, Md.) lead a deep receiving corps into action. Wilkins has caught 17 passes for 271 yards this season while Simpson has brought in 15 passes for 269 yards and a team-high three touchdowns. Senior tight end Stephon Jacob (Damascus, Md.) is coming off a career-high 81-yards receiving against JMU, including a 50-yard reception.
Defensive back Daniel Jones (Williamsburg, Va.) leads the team with 37 total tackles while Samari Springs (Ashburn, Va.) is second on the team with 30 tackles. Junior defensive end Maurice Jackson (Levittown, Pa.) leads the team with four sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss as the Spiders as a team have 14.0 sacks this year.
Saturday's game marks the 33rd meeting all-time between Richmond and Delaware. The Blue Hens lead the all-time series by a 21-11 margin but the Spiders have won six out of the last nine meetings, dating back to 2007. Richmond is 7-8 all-time against the Blue Hens at home, including a 31-17 victory last time Delaware traveled to Robins Stadium in 2016. Last season, the Spiders dropped a heartbreaker at Delaware in double overtime by a 42-35 margin. Former Spider quarterback Kyle Lauletta accounted for five touchdowns in the loss (4 passing, 1 rushing) but his throw to Dejon Brissett in the second overtime didn't connect sending Delaware to victory.
Saturday's game marks the 10th time Richmond has faced a former head coach as the leader of an opposing team. The Spiders are 4-5 all-time when facing a previous head coach. Delaware head coach Danny Rocco led the Spiders from 2012-16 and Richmond suffered a double overtime loss last season to the Blue Hens. The Spiders are 1-3 all-time against former head coach Mike London (2008-09), with losses in 2010, 2012 and 2014 against Virginia but posting a 68-21 win over Howard last season. Richmond is 1-0 against Jim Reid (1995-03), with a 58-7 win in 2006 against VMI. The Spiders went 1-0 against Latrell Scott (2010) with a 34-0 win over Norfolk State in 2016. Richmond also went 1-1 against former coach Frank Dobson (1913-17, 1919-33) with a loss to Maryland in 1936 and a win against the Terrapins in 1938.
Delaware enters Saturday's game with a 2-2 overall record and an 0-1 mark in CAA play, opening the season with a 21-19 loss at home to Rhode Island. The Blue Hens are coming off of a bye week and two weeks ago dropped a 38-10 meeting against top-ranked North Dakota State on the road. Delaware is averaging 118.5 yards per game on the ground this season while passing for 207.5 yards per game.
Kani Kane leads the Blue Hens in rushing with 249 yards on 62 carries while DeJoun Lee is second on the team with 213 yards rushing on 31 carries. Quarterback Pat Kehoe has passed for 830 yards on 55-of-108 passing, including six touchdowns. Defensively, linebacker Troy Reeder leads the team with 37 total tackles while cornerback Ray Jones is second with 33 tackles.
