PINEHURST, N.C. -- Playing on one of golf's biggest stages, the Spiders delivered one of the best rounds in program history Monday morning. Playing the No. 6 course at historic Pinehurst Resort, Richmond combined for a five-over par 293 in the first round -- tied for the third-lowest score in team history -- and found itself in first place entering the second round of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate. Following a score of 306 (+18) in round two, the Spiders will enter Tuesday's final round tied for fifth in the strong 17-team field.Â
Richmond was paced by a pair of even-par rounds of 72 in the first round from sophomore Lizzie Reedy and freshman Emily Ward. For Reedy, it was her fourth career round at or below par and first this season. For Ward, the round of 72 was four shots better than any other round of her freshman season.Â
It's another Spider, however, who is closest to the top of the leaderboard through two rounds. Senior Annie Collom is tied for 12th at 147 (+3) after rounds of 74 and 73 on Monday. She's one of three Spiders in the top 25, followed by Reedy (tied for 16th at 148) and senior Sophie DiPetrillo (tied for 25th at 150).Â
"We had a great first round and Annie, Sophie, and Lizzy had really solid days," said head coach Ali Wright. "Some big numbers hurt us in the second round, but we're looking forward to another chance to post the low round of the day tomorrow."
Tuesday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:45 AM. Richmond will tee off on holes five through eight and play alongside William & Mary, Georgia State, and Jacksonville.Â
