Football Hosts Villanova Saturday On Homecoming

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football returns to action off its bye week Saturday as the Spiders welcome in Villanova in Colonial Athletic Association play for the 2018 Homecoming game. Game time is set for 3 p.m.at Robins Stadium.
At halftime, the Spiders will honor the 2018 Hall of Fame class, which is be inducted Friday evening in a ceremony on campus. This year's class incudes Greg Lilly (football), Kevin Anderson (men's basketball), Tom Bondurant (Baseball) Becca Wann Taylor (women's basketball and soccer), Ken Hart (equipment room) and the 1999 men's golf team as a team of distinction.
Saturday's game will be broadcast on NBC Sports Washington+ and online via SpiderTV will Bob Black and Chris Anderson on the call. The game has also been picked up by NBC Sports Philadelphia+, NBC Bay Area, NBC Chicago+ and SNY. The game will be audio broadcast on ESPN Richmond and TuneIn with Robert Fish and Matt Smith on the call. Richmond enters Saturday's game with a 3-5 overall record and a 1-4 mark in CAA play. The Spiders suffered a 38-28 loss at No. 11 Elon last time out two weeks ago and will be playing their first home game since October 6. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Joe Mancuso (Blairsville, Ga.) has played the past three games as the starter and has passed for 1,016 yards this year. Mancuso is 68-of-113 from the air and has helped the Spiders to the top passing attack in the CAA, averaging 290.2 yards per game.
Wide receiver Cortrelle Simpson (Indian Head, Md.) leads the team with 36 catches for 651 yards and five touchdowns. Mancuso leads the team on the ground as well with 261 yards on 49 carries while Deontez Thompson (Indian Head, Md.) is second on the team with 221 yards on 53 carries.
Defensively, the Spiders rank second in the CAA with 23.0 sacks on the year. Junior defensive end Maurice Jackson (Levittown, Pa.) leads the team with 6.5 sacks on the year while senior Andrew Clyde (Dallas, Texas) has 4.5 sacks this season, all coming in the last two games.
Saturday's game marks the 36th meeting all-time between Richmond and Villanova. The Spiders are only 13-22 all-time against the Wildcats but have won the past two meetings and have won four out of the last five matchups. In fact, the Spiders have posted back-to-back shutouts against Villanova, blanking it 22-0 last year on the road and 23-0 in 2016 at home. It marks the only two times in series history Richmond as shutout out the Wildcats. The Spiders are 7-9 all-time against the Wildcats at home, including five-straight wins in Richmond in the series with the last loss at home coming in 2003. Richmond is a perfect 3-0 all-time against Villanova at Robins Stadium.
Last year, the Spiders held Villanova to just nine total first downs and only 163 yards of total offense. The Wildcats rushed for only 73 yards and passed for 90 yards in the home loss. In 2016, Villanova was limited to 222 yards of offense, including just 129 yards passing. Over the past two games, the Spiders have sacked the Wildcats eight times.
