Football Falls To #16 Maine In Home Finale

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football team dropped its third-straight game Saturday afternoon as the Spiders suffered a 28-9 defeat to No. 16 Maine at Robins Stadium. With the victory, Maine moves into sole possession of first place in the Colonial Athletic Association heading into the regular season finale. Richmond will conclude its season next weekend on the road when it travels to William & Mary for the 129th meeting of the Capital Cup.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Reid Chenault (Goochland, Va.) came on in relief and passed for 224 yards on 19-of-34 attempts. Chenault ran for 32 yards and scored the Spiders' lone touchdown in the loss. Senior wide receiver Jarmal Bevels (Fredericksburg, Va.) led the way with seven receptions for 85 yards while tight end Andrew Tsangeos (La Canda, Calif.) had a career-high five receptions for 61 yards.
Richmond's defense held Maine to only 57 yards rushing on 41 attempts Saturday. The Spiders posted three sacks on the day and had nine tackles for losses. Junior Daniel Jones (Williamsburg, Va.) led the way with 12 tackles while senior linebacker Dale Matthews Jr. (Bowie, Md.) added 11 tackles. Senior Andrew Clyde (Dallas, Texas) added a sack while Maurice Jackson (Levittown, Pa.) had a sack and two tackles for loss.
Maine opened the scoring with its first drive, going 65 yards on 11 plays. Chris Ferguson hit Earnest Edwards for a four-yard touchdown pass for the 7-0 lead. The Black Bears took a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter when Ferguson hit Jaquan Blair on a six-yard scoring strike.
The Spiders scored their only points of the first half after Chenault came on in relief and guided the Spiders into the red zone. Senior kicker Griffin Trau (Hanover, N.H.) capped the drive with a 23-yard field goal to make it a 14-3 contest. The Black Bears would score one more before the halftime break and took a 28-3 lead in the third quarter on Ferguson's fourth touchdown pass.
Richmond's lone touchdown was scored in the fourth quarter as it drove 75 yards on eight plays. The drive started with a 19-yard completion to senior Caleb Drake (Troy, N.C.). Bevels was big on the drove with three catches for 48 yards, including a big eight-yard grab for a third down conversion. Chenault capped the drive with a seven-yard rushing touchdown to make a 28-9 contest as the Spiders' two-point conversion attempt was off the mark.
Ferguson finished the game connecting on 20-of-32 for 229 yards and the four scores. Edwards caught six passes for 105 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the Blacks Bears are the only team in the CAA with just one league loss this year.
