RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football team closes out the 2018 season Saturday afternoon with the 129th meeting of the Capital Cup -- "The South's Oldest Football Rivalry" -- when the Spiders take on rival William & Mary. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Zable Stadium.
Saturday's game will be broadcast on Cox Yurview locally and will be available online via CAA TV with links at www.richmondspiders.com. The game will be audio broadcast on ESPN Richmond and TuneIn with Bob Black. Chris Anderson and Matt Smith on the call. Full game notes are available in the links to the right and are brought to you by Owen & Owens.
The two programs first faced off against each other Nov. 19, 1898 and have met at least once every year since then except for three years -- 1900, 1902 and 1943 . This year marks the 75th-straight year that the Spiders and Tribe have met on the football field (1944-2018).
The teams have been remarkably even over the long haul with the Spiders narrowly trailing the all-time series by a 61-62-5 mark and just as close on the road, trailing 20-21-1 in Williamsburg. Richmond has had success recently against the Tribe, winning six out the last seven meetings against it, including a 27-20 victory last year in Richmond. The Spiders took home the Capital Cup with a Kyle Lauletta one-yard run with 3:59 left in the fourth quarter. Running back Xavier Goodall (Richmond, Va.) had a career-day against the Tribe with 180 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns. Wide receiver Cortrelle Simpson (Indian Head, Md.) hauled in three receptions for 121 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Justin Rubin (Southampton, Pa.) and Samari Springs (Ashburn, Va.) had nine tackles apiece against the Tribe.
William & Mary head coach Jimmye Laycock and Richmond head coach Russ Huesman have a long history together and recently against each other. Laycock is in his 39th and final season in charge of the Tribe this year while Huesman is in his second season as head man at Richmond. Huesman spent 13 seasons on Laycock's staff in Williamsburg from 1984-1997 and also went head-to-head with Laycock for five years as an assistant with the Spiders from 2004-08.
Laycock has been a part of 39 meetings all-time against Richmond, 38 in the regular season and one postseason contest in 2015. He is 22-17 all-time against the Spiders in his career, including a nine-game winning streak from 1989-1997. Huesman has been a part of 19 games in the Capital Cup as both a member of the Richmond and William & Mary staffs. Huesman's teams are 17-2 all-time in the Capital Cup over his career. He helped William & Mary go 12-1 against Richmond from 1985-1997, helped the Spiders go 4-1 against the Tribe from 2004-08 and won last year's meeting against William & Mary.
Richmond enters Saturday's game with a 3-7 overall record and a 1-6 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play. The Spiders are actually looking to finish the season with a .500 record on the road, owning a 2-3 road mark so far this year. Richmond has won road games at Saint Francis and Albany this year.
Redshirt sophomore quarterback Joe Mancuso (Blairsville, Ga.) has been cleared to play this weekend and will battle with redshirt sophomore Reid Chenault (Goochland, Va.) for playing time against the Tribe. Mancuso leads the team with 332 yards rushing on 60 carries this season while also passing for 1,121 yards. He has connected on 74-of-128 through the air, including six touchdowns.
