Spiders Drop Road Game At Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, FL – The University of Richmond women's basketball team fell behind early in a 69-55 road loss Sunday at Florida Atlantic. Graduate student Daijia Ruffin (Louisville, Ky.) led the team with 12 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
Richmond drops to 1-4 on the season and FAU improves to 1-3 with the win. The Spiders only shot 24.3 percent from the field off 18-for-74. From the three-point line, Richmond only shot 16 percent (4-of-25) and was outrebounded 54-36.
Richmond was able to forced 27 turnovers by the Owls that led to 20 points off turnovers. Ruffin finished with a career-high 13 rebounds, including five offensive. Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) had 10 points and four rebounds. Freshman Emma Squires (Kingston, Mass.) added 10 points and classmate Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) poured in eight points off the bench.
Richmond got off to a slow start with Florida Atlantic taking a 9-3 lead with 5:50 remaining in the first quarter. The Spiders cut the lead to five points off a free throw by Squires to make the score 11-6.
The Spiders got within four points at 12-8 off a jumper by Ruffin but FAU answered with two free throws to lead 14-8 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, the Owls went on a 6-0 run to open up a 22-10 lead at the 6:23 mark. Richmond would respond with a 7-0 burst after two free throws by freshman Madelyn Neff (Hayward, Wis.) to make the score 22-17.
FAU hit a couple of three-pointers, including one from Myka Matthews with 44 seconds left to pull ahead 31-20 after two quarters.
Ruffin lead the team with eight points and seven rebounds after two quarters. Holt added four points off the bench.
FAU outscored Richmond 14-10 in the third quarter to take a 15-point lead into the fourth at 45-30. The Spiders played their best quarter by outscoring the Owls 25-24 in the fourth but it wasn't enough.
Squires scored eight of her 10 points in the fourth quarter and sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) had seven in the quarter.
With 2:58 remaining, Squires hit a three-pointer to get Richmond within 11 at 59-48 but FAU quickly answered with a three by Matthews to put the game out of reach at 62-48.
Richmond will head back to Florida to take part in the UCF Thanksgiving Tournament starting with UCF on Saturday, Nov. 24, at 2:30 p.m.
