Richmond Falls At UCF In Thanksgiving Tournament

ORLANDO, FL – The University of Richmond women's basketball team battled UCF on the road but turnovers proved to be the difference in a 70-48 loss Saturday at CFE arena. Sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) led the team with 14 points and five assists.
The Spiders fall to 1-5 on the season and UCF improves to 4-1 with the win. Richmond shot 34.9 percent from the field off 15-for-43 but committed a season-high 27 turnovers. The Knights came away with 13 steals, including seven from Kayla Thigpen off the bench.
Freshman Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) scored a season-high 11 points off three three-pointers and went 2-for-4 from the free throw line. Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) added five points and grabbed two rebounds.
The Spiders were ready for UCF's press right away scoring on a fast break layup from Hinds-Clarke to start the game. Carpenter made her first career start and hit a three-point to tie the game at 5-5 with 7:27 left in the first quarter.
The Knights opened an eight-point lead after going on a 10-2 run off some Richmond turnovers. UCF finished the quarter with a 19-9 advantage.
Richmond responded in the second quarter outscoring the Knights 10-8 to cut the lead to 27-19 after two quarters. UCF built an 11-point lead early in the second before Parson went on a 5-0 run herself to cut the lead to 23-17. With 3:36 remaining, freshman Madelyn Neff (Hayward, Wis.) hit a jumper to get the Spiders within four points at 23-19.
The Knight scored the last four points of the quarter to hold an eight-point lead. Freshman Imani Mustaf (Washington, D.C.) was a spark off the bench with two points and two blocks.
The Spiders pulled within five points at 27-22 after a three-pointer by Parson to start the third quarter. UCF went on a run to regain a 38-27 lead after a fast break layup by Kayla Thigpen.
UCF opened up a 14-point lead at 45-31 after a three-pointer by Kay Kay Wright with 2:27 left in the third. Parson hit another three-pointer with 40 seconds remaining in the third. The Knights outscored Richmond, 22-15, to take a 49-34 lead into the final quarter.
UCF scored the first nine points of the fourth quarter and cruised to a 70-48 win. The Knights outscored the Spiders, 21-14. Freshman Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.) hit a three-pointer at the buzzer as Richmond finished the game on a 7-0 run.
Richmond will remain in Orlando and will take on in-state foe Virginia Tech on Sunday, Nov. 25, at 11 a.m. inside CFE arena.
