RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond men's lacrosse head coach Dan Chemotti announced a challenging 2019 schedule for the Spiders Monday that features five non-conference games coming against teams ranked in the top 20 in the final Inside Lacrosse poll last season, including two teams that played in the Final Four last year.
The Spiders are defending Southern Conference regular season and tournament champions, advancing to the second NCAA Tournament in the short five-year history of the program last year. Richmond finished the 2018 season ranked No. 19 in the nation after finishing the year with an 11-6 overall record and a 6-1 mark in SoCon play.
The Spiders will begin the season with two exhibition dates, beginning January 26 at Navy, followed by a trip to Loyola Feb. 2.
The 2019 regular season starts with a bang February 9 as the Spiders travel to College Park, Md., for a meeting against Maryland. The Terrapins appeared in the NCAA Final Four last year, finishing with a 14-4 overall record and ranked No. 3 in the final poll of the season. It marks the first-ever meeting between the Spiders and Maryland.
Richmond continues its road swing February 16 when it travels to Bucknell. The Bison posted an 11-4 record last year and were ranked No. 16 in the final poll, but did not earn an NCAA Tournament bid after being upset in the Patriot League Tournament.
The Spiders open the home schedule February 19 for the first of six-straight home games at Robins Stadium when UMBC comes to town. Richmond hosts the first of three Atlantic Coast Conference opponents February 23 when Notre Dame makes its first-ever trip to Robins Stadium. The Fighting Irish finished ranked No. 9 in the country last year and appeared in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. The Spiders traveled to South Bend, Ind., last season and dropped an 11-7 contest to the Irish.
Richmond continues its early season gauntlet March 1 when it welcomes in NCAA Tournament Finalist Duke to Robins Stadium. The Blue Devils posted a 16-4 mark last season and finished the year ranked second in the nation after dropping the title game to Yale. This marks the fourth-straight season that Richmond and Duke have met with the Spiders winning in 2016 in Durham 12-10 and the Blue Devils claiming victory in the last two meetings.
New this season, Richmond will charge admission for its two home games against ACC foes in Notre Dame and Duke. Tickets will be $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. They can be purchased at the Richmond Ticket office and online prior to the game while also being available to buy at Robins Stadium the day of game. Tickets will go on sale Monday, February 4.
The Spiders continue the non-conference slate with their fourth-straight home game March 5 hosting Mount St. Mary's. The 2019 SoCon schedule features an eight-game slate with the Spiders opening March 9 against in-state foe VMI. Richmond closes out its six-game home stretch March 16 when it welcomes in Furman, the only team to defeat the Spiders in the SoCon regular season last year.
Richmond hits the road March 23 at Bellarmine in league play before closing out non-conference play March 29 with a trip to Charlottesville to take on Virginia. The Cavaliers finished the 2018 season with a 12-6 record and were ranked No. 10 in the final poll. This marks the sixth-straight year that Richmond and Virginia have met and the second-straight in Charlottesville.
The Spiders continue their four-game road stretch April 6 at Jacksonville in a rematch of the SoCon Tournament Championship game that Richmond won 11-10 in overtime. The Spiders travel to Air Force April 13 before hosting their lone home game in the month April 20 against Mercer for Senior Day. Richmond closes out the regular season at High Point April 27.
The 2019 SoCon Tournament will be held at High Point May 2-4 with the winner earning the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The top-four teams in the league earn a spot in the SoCon Tournament.
