Spiders Fall At Home Against Drexel

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team was outscored 20-10 in the third quarter and lost at home against Drexel, 58-35, Saturday afternoon at the Robins Center.
The Spiders fall to 2-10 on the season and Drexel improves to 8-3 with the victory. Richmond held Drexel to just 33.3 percent from the field and only 6-for-25 from the three-point line. The Dragons outrebounded the Spiders, 51-36.
Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) finished with seven points and a team-high eight rebounds. Freshman Claire Holt (Hoover, Ala.), making her first career start, led the team with 10 points.
The Spiders were outscored 39-20 in the second half and a big third quarter by Drexel proved to be the difference. Richmond finished the game shooting 25.5 percent from the field and just 19.2 percent from the three-point line.
Richmond trailed by four points after two quarters but only scored 15 points. The Spiders had a strong defensive effort holding Drexel to 1-for-12 from the three-point line and only 23.5 percent from the field.
Richmond only allowed 11 points and eight points in the first two quarters. Junior Amy Duggan (Norwood, Mass.) pulled down five rebounds.
Hinds-Clarke had five points and a team-high six rebounds after two quarters.
The Dragons jumped out to a 7-2 lead with 3:05 left in the first quarter. Duggan made a free throw and sophomore Kailyn Fee (Vienna, Va.) hit a three-pointer to get the Spiders within one at 7-6.
Drexel scored the last four points of the quarter to lead 11-6 after one. In the second quarter, Richmond cut the lead to 11-9 off a layup by Hinds-Clarke.
Holt made two free throws with 4:53 remaining in the second quarter to tie the game at 13-13.
Drexel end the second quarter on a 6-2 run after a layup Nana Ferariu gave them a 19-15 lead.
In the third quarter, Hinds-Clarke got Richmond within two points at 19-17 with a jumper at the 8:34 mark. Drexel pushed its lead to eight points after a 6-0 run off a layup by Nihill with 6:15 left in the third quarter.
The Spiders cut the lead to six points off a layup by Holt with 3:52 remaining but Drexel closed the third quarter on an 8-0 run to go ahead 39-25.
The Dragons scored eight quick points in the fourth quarter and never trailed the rest of the game. Richmond was outscored 19-10 in the fourth. Sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) scored five of her seven points in the final quarter.
The Spiders continue their homestand by hosting UNCG for their final non-conference game on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at 7 p.m.
