Richmond Uses Balanced Effort In Win Against UNCG, 59-48

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team had three players in double-figures and grabbed 44 rebounds in a 59-48 win against UNCG Wednesday night at the Robins Center. Junior Jaide Hinds-Clarke (Westwood, N.J.) secured her third career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Spiders finish the non-conference season with a 3-10 record but have started 2019 with a victory. UNCG falls to 6-9 on the season. Richmond outrebounded UNCG, 44-39, including 18 offensive rebounds.
Freshman guard Aniyah Carpenter (Baltimore, Md.) had a career-high 14 points and pulled down a career-best nine rebounds against the Spartans. Carpenter hit 3-for-6 from the three-point line and had two assists. Junior Amy Duggan (Norwood, Mass.) finished one-point shy of a double-double with nine points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Alex Parson (North Chesterfield, Va.) added 13 points and grabbed five rebounds.
Richmond shot 33.9 from the field and hit eight three-pointers in the victory. The Spiders forced UNCG into 18 turnovers and held their leading scorer Nadine Soliman (19 points per game) to just nine points.
The Spiders used a strong third quarter outscoring UNCG, 16-9, to open up an eight-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. With the game tied at 29-29, Richmond went on a key 8-2 run capped off by a Carpenter three-pointer with 2:53 left in the third. Carpenter had six points in the third quarter.
UNCG opened the fourth quarter with two-straight baskets to get within four at 42-38. The Spartans inched closer at 42-40 after two free throws by Soliman to make the score 42-40 with 7:53 remaining. The Spiders would score the next six points to lead 48-40 with 5:21 on the clock.
With 1:30 left, the Spartans made one last run cutting the lead to five at 53-48 but a clutch jumper by Parson and free throws down the stretch sealed the win. The Spiders scored the final six points to earn the 59-48 victory.
In a close battle, Richmond led 26-25 after two quarters. Hinds-Clarke led the team with seven points and grabbed two rebounds. Carpenter had five points with two rebounds. Parson added five points and dished out two assists.
The Spiders jumped ahead 7-3 in the first two minutes after a three-pointer by freshman Molly Mraz (Erie, Pa.). UNCG answered with a 6-1 run to take its first lead of the game at 9-8 off a layup by Aja Boyd.
With 30 seconds left in the first quarter, Carpenter hit a deep jumper to tie the game at 11-11. The Spartans took a four-point lead in the second quarter off a jumper by Mangela Ngandjui with 8:37 on the clock.
Richmond would respond with a 15-2 run to pull ahead 26-17 thanks to a bunch of long-range shots. Daijia Ruffin (Louisville, Ky.), Parson and Carpenter all hit three-pointers during the run.
The Spartans battled back by closing the second quarter with an 8-0 run holding Richmond scoreless for the final two minutes.
The Spiders will open Atlantic 10 conference play by hosting Rhode Island on Saturday, Jan. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Robins Center.
