Spiders Come Up Just Short at UMBC, 9-6
02/10/2018 | Men's Lacrosse
BALTIMORE, Md. – The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team (0-1) locked up with UMBC (1-0) on the road to get the 2018 season underway and despite an early lead were unable to hold off the hard-charging Retrievers down the stretch before falling, 9-6.
Five different Spiders found the back of the net to account for the six scores. Only Teddy Hatfield netted multiple goals will also adding an assist. Ryan Lanchbury, Tyler Shoults, Eric Haehl, and Mitch Goldberg contributed the other four scores. Goldberg's tally was his first since 2016 when he tallied 19 goals and 10 assists in just 10 games before suffering a season-ending injury.
In rainy conditions, UMBC was first on the board with a score at the 13:05 mark in the first but the Spiders were quick to respond. Tyler Shoults drove up the left side and fire home the first Spider goal of the 2018 season to knot the score as the first of four consecutive goals for the road side.
Lanchbury scored the second goal followed by true shots from Haehle and Goldberg before UMBC cut the lead in half with a goal at the six-second mark in the quarter.
Hatfield put his first goal on the board at the 12:49 mark in the second quarter. The goal was man-up following pushing penalty and the assist went to Anthony Faraino, his first of the season.
The offense stalled for the rest of the second quarter as UMBC added a pair of goals to make it a 5-4, Spider lead at the break. Richmond did manage to outshoot the Retrievers 20-9 (12-6 SOG) in the first half while forcing 10 turnovers.
UMBC outscored Richmond, 3-0, in the third to take a 7-5 lead but the fight was far from over. Richmond controlled the pace early in the fourth quarter but UMBC made it 8-5 before the Spiders could net their first of the fourth. Hatfield scored his second goal of the game to make it an 8-6 game at the 6:38 mark but that would be all for UR in this one.
UMBC added one more score down the stretch to keep the Spiders at arms length. Richmond will look to bounce back in its home opener opposite Bucknell next Saturday (Feb. 17) at Robins Stadium.
