02/10/2018 | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The University of Richmond women's basketball team (10-15, 5-7 Atlantic 10) was tested early and often on Saturday afternoon at La Salle (8-17, 3-9 A-10). The Spiders trailed by as many as 12 in the game and eight late in the fourth quarter but rallied behind 18 points from Alex Parson for the 60-57 victory.
Micaela Parson and Dee Hatcher joined Alex in double figures with 16 and 10, respectively, while three Spiders grabbed at least six boards, including Kylie Murphree who added three points and a pair of assists, moving her into fourth all-time by herself.
The Spiders were outshot and outrebounded but persevered nonetheless thanks to the resurgence of Alex Parson who had scored just eight points combined over her last five games.
La Salle was hot from the get-go, jumping out to a 17-5 lead by the 3:46 mark after canning a triple out of the media timeout. The Spiders then commenced on an 18-2 run that spanned the end of the first and beginning of the second quarters to take the lead. The Explorers kept it close but the Spiders were able to hold on and take a five-point advantage into the break, 34-39.
Richmond immediately pushed its lead out to eight points to behind the second half. With the Spiders leading by seven, 39-32, at the 6:47 mark, La Salle answered with a 15-0 run of its own to take back the lead, 47-39, with 29 seconds left in the quarter. Kylie converted inside to stop the run and Micaela canned a triple at the buzzer to quickly make it a three-point game with one quarter left to play.
Richmond trailed by as many as four early in the fourth but cut it to one on a Murphree free throw with 5:16 to play. Then the entire landscape of the game changed. Micaela Parson and her then-game-high 16 points fouled out with 4:44 to play. La Salle scored in its next possession to move ahead by three but Alex Parson was having none of it.
The freshman netted back-to-back buckets to give Richmond the lead back and it would never give it up. Alex scored again in the final minute and the Spiders made free throws to keep La Salle at arms-length the rest of the way.
The Spiders will visit St. Bonaventure on Wendesday (Feb. 14) before returning home for Senior Day on Sunday (Feb. 18) for round two of the Sonabank P.O.W.E.R. Crosstown Showdown opposite VCU.
