Offensive Outburst Leads Spiders Past George Mason, 16-2
02/17/2018 | Baseball
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Spider Baseball team put on quite the show on Saturday against George Mason as part of the Charleston Crab House Classic. Richmond (1-1) surged past the Patriots for a 16-2 victory.
"Aaron Winkler was tremendous today," said head coach Tracy Woodson. "He pounded the strike zone and did exactly what we needed him to do. The hitters swung the bat well and got ahead early, and Mason couldn't come back. I liked what I saw today and we need to go out there and do that again tomorrow."
Winkler had a career day on the hill as he went five innings and allowed just two hits. The right-hander struck out seven and did not allow a walk during his outing.
Along with a strong performance from Winkler and the bullpen, Richmond's bats were hot. The Spiders didn't hesitate to get things started as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to some Patriot miscues and a triple from Daniel Brumbaugh. In the third, Sage Bruhl's two-out, two-run single extended Richmond's lead. The Spiders went on to take a 6-0 advantage after a bases loaded walk allowed Brandon Johnson to cross the plate.
The offensive outburst continued in the fifth as the Spiders tacked on three more runs, capped by D.J. Lee's sac fly to bring in Johnson and make it 9-0. Mason got on the board in the sixth with a pair of runs to avoid the shutout. Richmond wasn't down though as they added five runs in the sixth and two in the seventh to secure their 16-2 victory.
The Spiders will conclude action in the Charleston Crab House Classic tomorrow as they square off with host, The Citadel. First pitch is scheduled 3:00 p.m., and a live broadcast will be available on the SoCon Digital Network.
