Three Spiders Reach 15-Point Mark In Loss To Saint Louis
02/17/2018 | Men's Basketball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Nick Sherod, De'Monte Buckingham and Jacob Gilyard combined for 51 points but the Spiders weren't able to match the physicality of Saint Louis in a 72-66 loss Saturday evening.Â
The Billikens held Richmond to just 26 points in the paint, the fewest for the Spiders in their last 10 games, and freshman forward Hasahn French scored 14 of his 15 points after halftime, many of them coming at the rim. Saint Louis grabbed 37 rebounds, 14 more than the Spiders, en route to a fifth win in their last six games.Â
Richmond scored the game's first six points on a three-point play by Grant Golden and a three-pointer from De'Monte Buckingham, but Saint Louis responded with an 11-0 run and led for the remainder of the first half. Buckingham stole the ball near halfcourt and raced for a layup just before the horn to shrink the Billikens lead to 30-27 at intermission and give Buckingham a game-high 13 at the break.Â
Richmond used a 12-0 run early in the second half to take a five-point lead at the under-16 media timeout, but Saint Louis countered with back-to-back buckets by French and a DJ. Foreman tip-in to pull back ahead. The Billikens eventually built their lead to as many as 11 before Richmond closed to within four behind 12 late points from Sherod and poor free-throw shooting by Saint Louis.Â
Sherod finished with a game-high 19 points, all coming in the second half, and narrowly missed his third-strafight 20-point game. Buckingham added 17 points, tied for the most he's scored in conference play this season, and recorded a team-high seven rebounds.Â
Jacob Gilyard scored 15 points and dished out five assists, half the Spiders total and more than any player on either team. Grant Golden's five points put him over the 400-point mark for the season. He became the fourth Spider freshman to ever score 400 points, joining Kendall Anthony (416 in 2011-12), Charles Stephens (459 in 1998-99), and Mike Perry (494 in 1977-78).Â
Richmond will play at George Washington on Wednesday at 7 PM. The game can be seen on the Stadium network.Â
