Buckingham Scores 21 In Loss At George Washington
02/21/2018 | Men's Basketball
WASHINGTON, D.C. - De'Monte Buckingham scored 21 points, his most since December, and added a team-high five assists but it wasn't nearly enough for the Spiders as Richmond fell to George Washington 103-77 at the Smith Center Wednesday evening.
Â
Wednesday's game marked the 100th meeting between the Spiders and Colonials, the fourth-most frequent Spiders opponent in program history. The loss snapped Richmond's streak of four straight wins vs George Washington, tied for its longest ever against the Colonials.
Â
The teams were tied at eight at the first media timeout and the Spiders trailed by just six with 9:39 remaining in the first half after Buckingham's three-pointer made the score 25-19.
Â
But George Washington outscored Richmond 29-6 over the remainder of the period to take a 54-25 lead at halftime. The Colonials shot 73 percent from the field and 86 percent in the first half and outrebounded the Spiders 21-5.
Â
Buckingham tried to get the Spiders back into the game in the second half – 15 of his 21 points came after intermission – but Richmond could never get the George Washington lead under 18 as the Colonials ran away with the win.
Â
In addition to registering his first 20-point game since December 22 vs Bucknell, Buckingham led Richmond with five assists.
Â
Grant Golden pulled down a team-high six rebounds to go along with his 11 points and is now one point shy of tying Kendall Anthony (416 in 2011-12) for the third-most points by a freshman in Spiders history.
Â
Jacob Gilyard also scored 11 points and added three steals. He increased his season total to 75 steals and now needs just 10 more to match the single-season program record set by Tony Dobbins during the 2003-04 season.
Â
Julius Johnson finished with 11 points for Richmond and made all six of his free-throw attempts. As a team, Richmond shot 19-20 from the free-throw line, the Spiders highest free-throw percentage in a game with at least 20 attempts since March 6, 2012 vs La Salle (also 19-20).
Â
Richmond returns to action Saturday at the Robins Center against Saint Joseph's. As part of Senior Night, the Spiders seniors will be honored before the game, which will tip at 6 PM and can be seen on NBC Sports Washington Plus and NBC Sports Philadelphia.
