Spiders Battle Duquesne in Final Night of A-10 Championship Action

GENEVA, Ohio – It was a nail-biting final night of the 2018 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championship, and it all came down to the last event. The Spiders, winners of 15 of the last 17 A-10 titles fell to Duquesne 567-558.

Sophomore Hannah Gouger defended her title as the Atlantic 10 champ in the 200 back stroke (1:56.27). Freshman Ellie Ronan (2:00.98) finished seventh in the finals. Hannah Verrette (1:59.20) and Sarah Mautino (2:00.84) went 1-2 in the consol finals.

Senior Erin Barry also defended her title in the 200 breast stroke just out touching Duquesne's Abby Stauffer at 2:14.41. Sophomore Lexie Gilbert finished 14th overall at 2:20.26.

Senior Laura Rokop (290.70) placed fifth in the 3-meter event while freshman Alex Beran (250.35) was eighth. Sophomore Maddy Chao placed 13th overall, scoring a 235.60 in the consolation final. Â

Sophomore Virginia Marsh was fifth in the 100 free at 50.41. In the 200 fly, junior Morgan Soulia finished eighth turning in a time of 2:05.64.

Junior Nicole Piercy (17:13.80) finished the 1,650 free in a 11th place, while freshman Sarah Mautino (17:38.10) placed 25th overall.

The Spider 400 free relay team finished sixth, touching the wall at 3:24.05.

- Sophomore Hannah Gouger clocked the fastest time in the 200 back at 1:57.97, which is an NCAA B-cut time. Gouger along with freshman Ellie Ronan (2:00.88) advanced to the finals.
- Sophomore Virginia Marsh touched the wall at 50.00 to claim the top-spot in the 100 free in the finals.
- The Spiders also took the top spot in the 200 breast stroke with Erin Barry leading the way with an NCAA B-cut time of 2:14.95. Sophomore Lexie Gilbert (2:20.76) advanced to the consol finals with a 14th place finish in prelims.
- Senior Laura Rokop and freshman Alex Beran advanced to the finals with scores of 255.35 and 243.70, respectively.
