Spiders Roll to 11-4 Win at Holy Cross
03/12/2018 | Women's Lacrosse
WORCESTER, Mass. – A little cold weather doesn't faze the University of Richmond women's lacrosse team.
Â
The Spiders started slow offensively on Monday afternoon, but scored seven-straight goals and saw goalie Megan Gianforte make a season-high 15 saves to roll past host Holy Cross, 11-4.
Â
The Crusaders started the scoring with a free position goal less than two minutes into the game, but Aly Fries evened things up just over a minute later.
Â
Neither team would score for the next 15 minutes, as both defenses took over the game. Kim Egizi finally put the Spiders ahead with her 21st goal of the year, and Holy Cross responded less than 30 second later to even things at 2-2.
Â
The two teams continued to trade goals, but Marissa Brown, Katie Sciandra and Fries each scored to give the Spiders a 5-3 edge at the break.
Â
The Spiders heated up in the second half, outscoring the Crusaders 6-1. Julia Schmuckler started the scoring just over 13 minutes into the half, before Sciandra scored her second of the day to make it 7-3. Brown then scored twice in a row to extend the lead and log the hat trick.
Â
Holy Cross looked to make a comeback in the closing minutes, but Julie Ball intercepted a long pass and transitioned the ball into the offensive end, where Egizi assisted Schmuckler for the 10-3 lead.
Â
The Crusaders' lone goal of the half came with under three minutes to play, but Sciandra scored her third goal of the day and 19th of the season to wrap up the game.
Â
Gianforte's 15 saves on the day were just one shy of tying her career high. Gianforte also led the team with six ground balls, while Ball caused a team-high four turnovers. Egizi moves into fifth all-time in career points at Richmond with her four points on the day.
Â
The Spiders return to action this Saturday, March 17, when they travel to Harrisonburg to take on No. 5 James Madison. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
