JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Spiders wrapped up a trip to the Sunshine State with a one-run victory over Jacksonville on Tuesday night, 4-3.
After three scoreless innings, Kyle Schmidt drove in Sage Bruhl for the first run of the game to put the Spiders (8-7) ahead, 1-0. Jacksonville (10-7) responded in the bottom half of the inning with three runs to take a 3-1 advantage. Lowell Schipper had a career-long outing on the hill going 4.1 innings and notched three strikeouts, before giving way to Jacob Lamb.
Richmond overcame the two-run deficit as they took a 4-3 lead over the Dolphins, one they wouldn't relinquish. Vinny Capra and Bruhl got things started with back-to-back singles and advanced on a JU error. The Spiders proceeded to score three runs in the inning thanks to a couple walks and a wild pitch.
Jacksonville threatened in the eighth, but the Spiders got out of the jam leaving the JU runners stranded. The Spiders protected their one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth as Layne Looney sent the Dolphins down in order to pick up his first save of the season.
The Spiders will conclude its spring break road trip with a stop in Charleston tomorrow (Wednesday, March 14) as they visit The Citadel. That game has been moved up to a 4PM start time.
