UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Despite a late rally, the Spiders dropped a 2-1 decision to UMass on Saturday afternoon at Pitt Field.
Much like yesterday, the Spiders jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. This time thanks to a sac fly from Jordan Schulefand. Behind a stand-up double from Marcus Fry, UMass evened the score at 1-1.
The Minutemen grabbed a one-run lead on a single from Cooper Mrowka in the sixth. Richmond looked to answer in the seventh when Sage Bruhl led off with a double down the left field line. Bruhl stole third but the Spiders were unable to bring him home.
In the eighth, the Spiders threatened again when Tyler Plantier blasted a shot out to left but the UMass left fielder grabbed it at the wall to preserve their lead.
Kyle Schmidt laced a double down the left field line with one out and Bruhl drew a walk, however the rally came up just short and the Minutemen evened the series.
In James Hulbert's three innings of scoreless relief he set a new career-high with four strikeouts.
The Spiders will wrap-up the conference series with UMass tomorrow at 12PM.
