UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Behind a six-run fifth inning, the Spider Baseball team surged past UMass, 7-1, on Sunday afternoon for the Atlantic 10 series win.
The Minutemen (7-6, 1-2) grabbed a 1-0 lead when Eddy Hart crossed the dish on a sac fly, but Richmond (14-9, 2-1) would answer. In the bottom of the third, thanks to an RBI single from Vinny Capra, the Spiders evened the score 1-1.
A six-run fifth inning put the Spiders in control of the scoreboard with a 7-1 lead they wouldn't relinquish. With the bases loaded, Capra blasted a two-run double down the left field line to drive in the first two runs of the offensive outburst. A Kyle Adams triple and a Kyle Schmidt single capped off the scoring.
Robbie Baker logged a strong outing going six innings where he allowed just two hits and one run. The right-hander registered five strikeouts and after giving up a leadoff single retired 15 consecutive batters en route to his second win of the season. Matt Olson tossed two scoreless relief innings before giving way to Layne Looney, who sent UMass down in order in the top of the ninth.
The Spiders will entertain Big Ten foe Maryland on Tuesday afternoon at Pitt Field. First pitch is slated for 3PM and will be available on SpiderTV/Atlantic 10 Network.
