Spiders Drop Close 4-3 Match at Navy
03/04/2018 | Women's Tennis
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team took Navy to the brink on Sunday afternoon, but the Spiders couldn't finish the job in a close 4-3 loss.
"This was a tough loss, but we put up a good fight," head coach Mark Wesselink said after the match. "We haven't been able to establish our doubles pairings, and that point was the difference today."
Navy jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by sweeping doubles play.
The Spiders mounted a comeback in singles action, beginning with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win for senior Gaby Rosales on court 6. Kiana Marshall was able to hold off Carlee Conway at No. 4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, and Emily Dunbar logged a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 comeback win over Amanda Keller on court 1, but three more Navy singles wins would seal the win for the hosts.
"We're getting better every match, and right now that is our No. 1 goal," Wesselink said.
The Spiders are now set to host Delaware in their first home match of the season at the newly renovated Westhampton Tennis Courts on Friday, March 9. Match time is set for 2:30 p.m.
