UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's lacrosse team jumped out to a perfect 4-0 start in A-10 play with two decisive wins this past weekend, and three Spiders have been recognized for their performances.
Â
Junior Katie Sciandra was named the A-10 Player of the Week for the second time this season, while fellow junior Julie Ball earned A-10 Defensive Player of the Week accolades, also for the second time. Freshman Rachel Ziemba was named the league's Co-Rookie of the Week.
The sweep of the three weekly awards is the first for Richmond since the A-10 Defensive Player of the Week accolade was created back in 2010.
Â
Sciandra had another standout weekend for the Spiders, totaling eight goals and an assist. The midfielder scored six goals - including four from free position - and added an assist in UR's 16-7 win at Saint Joseph's, before scoring two goals in the opening minute and three seconds to kickstart a 14-3 win over George Washington. Sciandra leads the conference with 45 goals this season after scoring just 11 in 2017, and is No. 1 in the nation with 2.17 free position goals per game.
Â
Ball led a Spider defense that allowed just 10 total goals this past weekend, including just three in the 14-3 win over George Washington. The defender won a career-high seven draw controls, collected a career high seven ground balls and caused four turnovers in Friday's 16-7 win at Saint Joseph's, before adding one ground ball, three draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers on Sunday. She leads the team with 31 caused turnovers this season, and is third with 33 ground balls. Â
Â
Ziemba made a statement this past weekend while making her college debut after sitting out the Spiders' first 10 games due to injury. The rookie scored a pair of goals and assisted on two others in the win at Saint Joseph's, before adding another assist in Sunday's 14-3 win. She also totaled three ground balls over the weekend to start her career.
