04/27/2018 | Baseball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Led by an offensive outburst, the Spider Baseball team powered past Dayton, 7-3, Friday. Richmond bats amassed 16 hits, the most in a game this season.
Dayton plated a runner in first inning on an RBI single from Tate Hagan. Back-to-back singles in the home half from Vinny Capra and Kyle Adams put the Spiders in a position to threaten but the runners were left stranded.
With a solo home run from Daniel Brumbaugh in the second, the Spiders evened the score at 1-1. The tied game was short-lived as Dayton drove in a pair in the third to take a 3-1 advantage. Richmond responded once again driving in a pair of runs on a groundout and single from Tyler Plantier. Richmond looked to break through the tied ball game in the fourth but left the bases juiced and the score at 3-3.
A four-run sixth inning powered the Spiders to a 7-3 lead. The first runs of the inning came on a balk and an Adams double. Richmond capped off the inning with a Kyle Schmidt sac fly and a single from Brumbaugh.
On the hill, Tim Miller made his 10th start as he went five innings and scattered six hits. Antonio Balducci came on in in the sixth to toss three strong innings of relief as he allowed just one hit and struck out four en route to his third win of the season. Layne Looney came in to close down the game and registered one strikeout in his ninth inning appearance.
The series is set to resume tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
