Six Spiders Earn SoCon All-Conference Honors
05/02/2018 | Men's Lacrosse
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With the 2018 Men's Lacrosse Championship set to get underway at Robins Stadium on Thursday, the Southern Conference announced on Wednesday afternoon its All-Conference awards, highlighted by six Richmond Spiders earning recognition for the tremendous season they've put together.
Joining the First Team, is senior LSM Austin Cates, redshirt-senior attacker Mitch Goldberg, junior attacker Teddy Hatfield and freshman defenseman Jason Reynolds. Freshman midfielder Mitch Savoca is lone Spider representative on the Second Team but in addition, joins fellow newcomer Ryan Lanchbury on the All-Freshman Team.
Hatfield's career is quickly turning historic. During the 2018 campaign the junior has scored 28 goals to go with 20 assists to become the program and SoCon all-time points leader (143) while also jumping into the Richmond all-time lead in assists (62) while currently sitting in third, just 14 scores shy of the goals record. His 3.43 points per game this season rank second in the SoCon and his 20 assists rank third overall. This is Hatfield's third All-Conference recognition after earning First Team honors in 2017 and All-Freshman Team in 2016.
Goldberg, who has been here since the beginning, the last player from Richmond's inaugural season, earns his fourth All-Conference recognition after returning to complete his career on the field after missing all of 2017. Goldberg has scored 15 goals this season to go with eight assists but his impact goes far beyond the numbers. He's a coach on the field for the Spiders that has brought this young group to a second-straight regular season title.
Austin Cates, is another Spider whose effect on a game goes beyond what can be measured in the stat sheet. His 46 ground balls leads the Spiders and his 14 caused turnovers rank second. He is universally recognized as one of the best defensive midfielders in the Southern Conference as referenced by his 2018 Preseason All-Conference nod and two prior All-Conference honors.
Jason Reynolds came to the Spiders a highly decorated high school star from the same institution attended by recent NFL Draft pick of the N.Y. Giants and former Spider QB Kyle Lauletta (Downington East). The freshman anchored the Spider defense that needed to be completely overhauled after losing its entire first unit to graduation at the end of a historic 2017 campaign. Reynolds collected 26 ground balls to go with 13 caused turnovers in 14 starts.
On the second team, Mitch Savoca stood out as a breakout star for the Spiders in 2018. He scored 19 goals to go with five assists, scoring on 42.2 percent of his attempts with 64.4 percent of his shots being on goal. His 19 scores rank third on the team behind Hatfield and Lanchbury and his 24 points rank fourth. He has tallied a pair of hat tricks this season, highlighted by a four-goal performance opposite Jacksonville at Robins Stadium. Three of those scores came in the fourth quarter as he guided his team to a crucial victory at that stage of the season.
A 2017 Under Armour All-American, Ryan Lanchbury came to Richmond with all of the expectations of a star in the making and he lived up that. The freshman appeared in all 14 games, making 13 starts en route to 22 goals and 11 assists (33 points). He has registered a hat trick five times and in each of the last three games. For his three-goal, two-assist performance against Jacksonville he was named the SoCon Offensive Player of the Week.
The Spiders now turn their attention to Furman looking to avenge a, 9-10, loss back in March to begin SoCon play. The Paladins come in as the No. 4 seed and will match up with Richmond on Thursday evening at 5:30, under the lights of Robins Stadium. The High Point/Jacksonville matchup with follow with the two winners locking up at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.
