05/23/2018 | Baseball
ARLINGTON, Va. –The Spider Baseball team fell in a 6-2 contest to Davidson in the opening round of the 2018 Atlantic 10 Tournament.
The Spiders threatened early as they looked to score first, but it was Davidson who got on the board first behind Brett Centracchio's two-run homer in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, the Spiders looked to answer with singles from Justin Cook and Sage Bruhl, but the runners were left stranded.
Davidson added to their lead, 4-0, in the sixth on a two-homer from Justin Lebek. The Wildcats wanted to extend their lead in the inning but Antonio Balducci took the hill in relief and recorded the last out to keep Richmond within four.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Spiders cut Davidson's lead in half. Kyle Schmidt led off the inning when he reached on an error and Daniel Brumbaugh doubled to the gap in right center. Cook delivered a hard-hit single to drive in Schmidt and put Richmond on the board. Brumbaugh crossed the dish on an RBI fielder's choice putting the Spiders within two, 4-2.
The Wildcats responded to the Richmond rally with a run in the seventh and a run in the eighth to take a 6-2 lead. Richmond continued to battle, but Davidson put a stop to an opportunity to chip away at their lead.
Richmond continues action in the A-10 Tournament tomorrow at 8:30 p.m. in an elimination game. The Spiders will face the loser of game six (top-seeded Saint Louis vs. Davidson).
