Spiders Vindicate Wednesday Loss to Advance in A-10 Tournament
05/25/2018 | Baseball
ARLINGTON, Va. –The Spiders got revenge on Thursday night in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, as Richmond knocked out Davidson with an 8-4 victory. The Spider bats were hot from start to finish as Richmond matched a season-high 16 hits.
Each Spider in the lineup registered at least one hit in the contest.
The Spiders didn't waste any time getting things started on Friday night. Back-to-back singles from singles Vinny Capra and Kyle Adams put runners on for Daniel Brumbaugh who smacked a double to the gap in left center and put Richmond on the board, 2-0 in the first inning. Davidson looked to respond in the bottom half when Justin Lebek tripled, but Tim Miller registered two strikeouts to end the threat.
Davidson cut Richmond's lead in half in the second on an RBI single. The 'Cats looked to even the score or take the lead in the inning as they loaded the bases, but the runners were left stranded.
A pair of runs in the fourth gave the Spiders a 4-1 lead. Richmond capitalized on walks and Sage Bruhl crossed the plate thanks to a D.J. Lee sac fly. Vinny Capra delivered a two-out RBI single to drive in Tyler Plantier and add some insurance runs.
Plantier led off the sixth with a double down the right field line and advanced to third on a sac bunt. Capra came up with another two-out single to bring Plantier home and make it a 5-1 Spider advantage.
The 'Cats scratched across a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to get within two runs of Richmond. The Spiders put a stop to any more damage as they threw out a runner and Jacob Lamb registered a strikeout to end the inning.
Richmond responded to Davidson's rally in the seventh when Plantier smashed a two-run double down the left field line to add to extend the Spider lead, 7-3. The Spiders weren't done there as Adams led off the eighth with a single through the left side and Justin Cook continued the hit parade when he smacked a double down the left field line to make it an 8-3 ball game.
Davidson wasn't going to go quietly as they threatened in the bottom of the ninth. They were able to plate one in the ninth, but it wouldn't be enough as Richmond maintained its lead to advance to tomorrow's action.
The Spiders continue tournament play tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. as they square off George Washington.
