Spiders Named Academic Honor Squad, Three earn Academic Honor Roll By IWLCA

RICHMOND, Va. – For the sixth-straight year and seventh time in the last eight years, the University of Richmond women's lacrosse program has been named a Zag Sports Academic Honor Squad by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA). Each program with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher earned IWLCA Academic Squad honors.
Leading the way for the Spiders were three student-athletes named to the Zag Sports Academic Honor Roll in juniors Mia Castagnero (Apex, N.C.), Aly Fries (Victor, N.Y.) and Maria McDonough (Pennington, N.J.). To be eligible for this honor, student-athletes must be a junior, senior, or graduate student and have earned a cumulative academic GPA of 3.50 or greater. The IWLCA honored 429 student-athletes from 98 different institutions on the 2018 IWLCA Zag Sports Division I Academic Honor Roll.
Castagnero, a psychology major, earned Atlantic 10 All-Tournament honors after helping the Spiders claim the A-10 Tournament Championship. She scored four goals in the championship game victory over defending champion Massachusetts. She scored 21 goals this season and posted four assists.
Fries is a two-time Atlantic 10 Conference All-Academic Team selection in her business administration major. She appeared in 20 games for the Spiders on attack this past season, scoring 20 goals and recording four assists.
McDonough is majoring in interdisciplinary studies and French. She appeared in 18 games, making one start before suffering a season-ending injury in the A-10 Tournament semifinals. The defender collected three ground balls and caused four turnovers on the year.
