RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond Vice President and Director of Athletics John Hardt has announced a new five-year contract for women's lacrosse head coach Allison Kwolek. Kwolek has led the Spiders for the past six years and is coming off her most successful season in 2018.
Â
"Coach Kwolek has done an outstanding job leading our women's lacrosse program both on and off the field," Hardt said. "She has built a championship caliber program with outstanding student-athletes and we're excited to ensure her leadership of the program for years to come! This past year was great for Spider lacrosse, and we look forward to building on that positive momentum next season. Allison is a great ambassador for the University of Richmond and Spider athletics!"
Â
Kwolek was named the 2018 Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the Year after leading Richmond to a share of the regular season title and winning the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament, advancing to the NCAA Tournament. She led the Spiders to a program-tying 16-4 record overall and the A-10 Conference Tournament championship win over defending champion Massachusetts at home at Robins Stadium.
Â
Richmond advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2007, facing off against Northwestern in the first round, falling 24-18 in the highest-scoring game in NCAA Tournament history. The Spiders finished the season 20th in the nation in NCAA RPI, while also receiving votes in both national polls.
Â
"I am very appreciative of John Hardt's support and commitment to the women's lacrosse program," Kwolek said. "I've really enjoyed my time here at Richmond, and I'm looking forward to continuing to grow this program and work with our tremendous student-athletes."
Â
Under Kwolek's guidance in 2018, eight Spider student-athletes earned All-Conference honors, including A-10 Offensive Player of the Year Kim Egizi and A-10 Defensive Player of the Year Julie Ball. Ball and Egizi also became the first Spiders to earn All-Region honors since 2008. The Spiders broke multiple single-season records on the year, including single-season goals (288), while Egizi broke the single-season point mark, Katie Sciandra broke the single-season goal mark, and Caroline Queally broke the single-season draw control mark for the third time in her career.
Kwolek has led Richmond to the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament championship for five-straight years. In 2017, she led the Spiders to a 14-6 record with the 14 wins finishing second all-time in program history and the most since the 2007 season. Through her six seasons with the Spiders, she has led the program to 67 wins overall and 33 in A-10 action. Kwolek has coached 23 All-Conference winners at Richmond, including 13 First Team honorees, while five Spiders have earned A-10 major awards.
