Second Half Goals Send Rutgers Past Spiders, 3-0
08/26/2018 | Field Hockey
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The University of Richmond field hockey team faced off with host Rutgers to wrap up opening weekend, but the Spiders could not match up with the Scarlet Knights' offensive pressure, falling 3-0 in nonconference action.
Â
The Rutgers offense attacked early and often throughout the first half, forcing Spider goalkeeper Emily Braunewell to make seven saves in the opening stanza. Despite 11 shots taking in the first half, Braunewell and the defense held the host team off the board entering the break.
Â
Rutgers finally broke through in the 45th minute, scoring the game's opening goal off of a penalty stroke. After 10 more scoreless minutes, the Scarlet Knights capitalized on a penalty corner to double their lead.
Â
The Spiders managed a pair of shots in the closing minutes, but a final Rutgers goal would be enough to give the host team the 3-0 win.
Â
Braunewell had a standout day, making 15 saves in cage for the Spiders and coming up just short of her career high of 18 set back in 2015.
Â
The Spiders will now head back home to face visiting Lafayette on Friday, August 31, in the squad's home opener. Game time at Crenshaw Field is set for 3 p.m.
