RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football team hits the road for an unexpected game Thursday night as the Spiders will face off against Saint Francis in Loretto, Pa. The game will kick-off at 5 p.m. at DeGol Field. The game has been moved to the road due to Hurricane Florence and the state of emergency that has been declared in the state of Virginia.
The game video streamed by Saint Francis on the NEC Front Row for free. Links are available on www.richmondspiders.com The game will also air on ESPN Richmond on 99.5 & 102.7 FM and 950 AM with Bob Black, Chris Anderson and Matt Smith on the call. The audio will also stream on www.RichmondSpiders.com and one the TuneIn App. Full game notes are available in the links to the right and are brought to you by Owen & Owens.
This marks the second-straight year that the Spiders have had a game moved due to a Hurricane. Last season, the Spiders were scheduled to play at Sam Houston State August 27 but were forced to move their game due to Hurricane Harvey. The game was postponed until September 1 and was played in Waco on the campus of Baylor University.
Thursday's game marks the first-ever meeting between Richmond and Saint Francis. The game is just the third game all-time between the Spiders and a member of the Northeast Conference. Richmond played Duquesne once in 1937 and Wagner College once in 2011, winning against Wagner and falling to the Dukes.
Richmond is coming off a 52-7 victory last weekend over Fordham in its home opener. The Spiders out-scored the Rams 35-0 in the third quarter, including opening the second half with a 75-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kevin Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.) to wide receiver Dejon Brissett (Mississauga, Ontario). Brissett averaged 43.3 yards per catch, hauling in four receptions for a career-high 173 yards.
Johnson accounted for four total touchdowns Saturday night before giving way to his backup early in the second half. He passed for two second half touchdowns after rushing for two first half touchdowns. His two rushing touchdowns marks the first Spider quarterback to have two rushing scores in the same game since Kyle Lauletta had a pair against William & Mary December 5, 2015.
The Spiders defense was strong last weekend as well, forcing four turnovers Fordham, intercepting three passes and forcing one fumble. The four turnovers forced are the most by Richmond since forcing six turnovers against Towson October 14 of last year. That game, the Spiders recorded four interceptions and recovered two fumbles. Last week, Richmond got interceptions from Dionte Austin (Baltimore, Md.), Samari Springs (Ashburn, Va.) and Jordan Payne (Conyers, Ga.), while Andrew Clyde (Dallas, Texas) recovered a fumble forced by Maurice Jackson (Levittown, Pa.).
Richmond has pressured the quarterback through the first two games this year after finishing second in the Colonial Athletic Association in sacks last season. Through the first two games this year the Spiders are second in the CAA with 8.0 sacks. Jackson leads the way this year with 3.0 sacks in the first two games while fellow defensive lineman Colby Ritten (Orlando, Fla.) is second on the team with 2.0 sacks.
Saint Francis enters the game with a 1-1 overall record, dropping a two-point game at Lehigh before downing Delaware State 45-14 in its home opener last weekend. The Red Flash were picked to finish fourth in the Northeast Conference according to the pre-season coaches' poll. SFU returns nine starters on offense and six on defense from a 5-6 season that saw them go 3-3 in conference play.
