Football Opens CAA Play Saturday At No. 20 Stony Brook

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond football team opens Colonial Athletic Association play this weekend with the Spiders travel to Long Island to face off against No. 20 Stony Brook. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at LaValle Stadium and the game will be broadcast online through College Sports Live/CBS Digital, with links available at www.RichmondSpiders.com.

Saturday's game marks the fifth meeting all-time between Richmond and Stony Brook. Each team has won two meetings in the all-time series, but the Seawolves have won the last two meetings. Richmond won the first meeting 42-0 at home in 2007 and posted a 39-31 victory at Stony Brook in 2013. The Seawolves recorded a 42-14 victory at home in 2016 while notching a 27-24 win at Richmond last season.
Senior wide receiver Tyler Wilkins (Richmond, Va.) has posted two 100-yard games in his career against Stony Brook. Wilkins gathered nine receptions for 112 yards last season and had six receptions for 106 yards in 2016. Senior linebacker Justin Rubin (Southampton, Pa.) led the defense last season with 10 tackles, including 2.0 tackles for loss . Stony Brook quarterback Joe Carbone is 2-0 against the Spiders in his career, connecting on 30-of-44 passes for 316 yards and three touchdowns.
The 2018 season marks the 12th season for Richmond in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Spiders are 54-34 all-time in CAA play dating back to their inaugural season in 2007. Richmond is 6-5 all-time in CAA openers but have gone just 2-5 since 2011 in those games. This year marks just the fourth time in program history the Spiders have opened CAA play on the road. Richmond is 2-1 when opening league play on the road with wins at Delaware in 2009 and at Villanova in 2012. The Spiders' lone loss on the road in a CAA opener came in 2016 with a 42-14 loss at Stony Brook. The game also marks the only other time the Spiders and Seawolves have met in a conference opener.
This week, the CAA had six teams ranked in the STATS, Inc. Top 25 poll and four teams receiving votes, accounting for 10 of the 12 teams in the CAA. Richmond is one of the four teams receiving votes in the poll along with Towson, Delaware and New Hampshire. The Spiders' schedule includes five of the six teams currently ranked in the top 25 in the CAA, beginning with this Saturday against No. 20 Stony Brook. Richmond is also slated to face James Madison (#2), Elon (#12), Maine (#13) and Villanova (#15). Saturday's game is one of two road league games the Spiders are schedule to play against a team currently ranked in the top 25.
Richmond enters Saturday's game with a 2-1 overall record and is coming off a 35-27 victory over Saint Francis last Thursday night on the road. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Richmond but was moved to Loretto, Pa., and moved up to a Thursday game due to forecasted weather from Hurricane Florence. Richmond scored two touchdowns in the final 1.7 seconds of the game to claim victory.
The Spiders marched 65-yards down the field for the game-winning touchdown in the final 1:05 of the game. Junior quarterback Kevin Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.) was 4-of-6 on the final drive, connecting on his last three passes, for 57 yards. He capped the drive by finding Wilkins for a six-yard touchdown in the back corner to put the Spiders in front with 1.7 seconds remaining. Defensive end Maurice Jackson (Levittown, Pa.) scored another touchdown on the game's final play when Saint Francis was using multiple laterals in an attempt to score a wild touchdown.
Johnson enters Saturday's game 47-of-78 through the air in the first three games for 721 yards and four touchdowns. Brissett leads all receivers with 16 receptions for 304 yards and one touchdown, averaging 101.3 yards per game. Junior Cortrelle Simpson (Indiana Head, Md.) is second on the team with 128 yards receiving on seven catches while Wilkins adds 101 yards on seven receptions.
Defensively, Daniel Jones (Williamsburg, Va.) leads the team with 20 tackles on the year while Jackson is second on the team with 18 tackles. Jackson leads the team with 4.0 sacks and 5.5 tackles for loss. Sophomore defensive tackle Colby Ritten (Orlando, Fla.) is second on the team with 2.0 sacks while adding 4.0 tackles for loss.
Stony Brook enters Saturday's game with a 2-1 record on the year as well, posting wins over Bryan and Fordham while falling to Air Force on the road. The Seawolves are coming off a 10-3 record last season and an appearance in the FCS Playoffs. Stony Brook has rushed for 614 yards this season while passing for 369 yards in three games.
The Seawolves have two big running backs in the attack with Jordan Gowins leading the way with 317 yards on 40 carriers and a pair of touchdowns. Donald Liotine is second on the team with 244 yards rushing on 37 carries. Quarterback Joe Carbone has connected on 25-of-63 through the air for 328 yards this season.
The Stony Brook defense is allowing 337.7 yards of total offense per game this season. The Seawolves have forced nine turnovers this season, including three they have returned for defensive touchdowns. Shayne Lawless leads the team with 28 tackles while Noah McGinty is second on the team with 26 tackles.
