Spiders Race at 2018 Paul Short Run
09/29/2018 | Cross Country
Bethlehem, Pa. - Coming off a strong showing for the men's and women's teams at the University of Delaware Invitational, the Spiders had their work cut out for them as they headed to the Paul Short Race and the women's team claimed 13th and the men took 23rd.Â
While the Spiders did compete solidly, women's cross country coach Lori Taylor says "this is not the day we wanted. The bottom line we did not race to our potential. We need our upperclassmen and leaders to compete hard and lead our team out on the course." Concerning the performance overall, coach Steve Taylor said "Our front three ran well, unfortunately we were searching for 4th and 5th. We will continue to work on our 1-5 split in the weeks to come."Â
The women's team came in 13th out of 41 teams in the Women's Gold 6K. Colleen Carney again came out with a great performance, leading the Spider women with a time of 21:37, finishing in 36th place (up from 63rd last year). Junior Ave Grosenheider (22:01), seniors Amanda Corbosiero (22:09), Jordan Angers (22:17) and Courtney Thompson (22:28) took the top five Spider finishes, coming in 76th, 90th, 106th and 134th respectively in a field of 370.Â
The men's team had runners in the Men's College Gold Division and the Open Men's 8K races. The men in the Gold Division came in 23rd as a team, with junior Miles Clikeman finished 14th overall, leading the Spider men with a time of 24:45, less than four seconds off of his personal record for an 8K. Freshman Peter Borger (25:24), senior Johnny Hogue (25:29), freshman Patrick Sutphin (26:41) and sophomore Paul Knepple (26:52) rounded out the top 5 Spider finishers, coming in 64th, 73rd, 223rd and 235th overall out of a field of nearly 400. Knepple notched a personal best for his 8K, beating his previous time of 27:15.
In the coming weeks, the Spiders will be looking to develop a more even 1-5 spread with their teams and will have the opportunity to showcase their growth at the October 13th NCAA Pre-Nationals hosted in Madison, Wi. before hosting the Atlantic 10 Championships on October 27th in Mechanicsville, Va.
